Are these cords different than the standard 3X3FIT tension cords?  Yes, they are uniquely different and do not take the place of the standard 3X3FIT cords.  The POWER FLEX CORDS function differently with several different tensions (15, 20 & 25 lbs.), flexibility, stretch and the comfort of the protected cord sleeve against the skin allowing for brand new exercises and 3X3FIT workouts. We highly recommend you begin with LIGHT.  However, there may be workouts that you will go between the LIGHT and the MEDIUM as you get started.   Kim Marie Ross, 3X3FIT Product and Program Developer uses LIGHT and MEDIUM and suggests that while getting the HEAVY cord is a great option if budget allows, LIGHT is truly necessary for proper range of motion as you get started.  You will compromise your range of motion with the exercises to begin with HEAVY.
